The premise is that a year-old girl who has been disguised as a boy for ~7 or so years, literally runs into the Duke, who makes her his page. It turns out that not only is the page boy not a boy, she's also not who she thinks she is/5(68).

These Old Shades is my favorite Heyer book and some of the details had stayed with me for 50 years which is a pretty strong recommendation for a book. Stayed with me so much so that this is the first re-reading I have given it/5(K).

How did the narrator detract from the book. Didn't like his portrayal of Avon and thought Lady Fanny was a pastiche. THESE OLD SHADES includes the best of Ms. Heyer's considerable style.
